if you give a mouse a cookie…

“Everyone? You called everyone you know? Oof, I mean I guess we can hang on to it for another few days until you figure something out.”

The artist, making faces at her own images in the monitor.

It feels like every step I take reveals two more that I need to take before everything feels finished. Oh, clients are actually booking me? I guess I need to have a space that’s usable for shoots, and not just fun for me and my nerdy friends and start scheduling. Oh, I found a mirror that fits my space but not my car? I guess I need to rent a truck and buy some tie down straps. I guess I need to find a theme. I guess I need to learn to interior decorate. I guess I need to learn basic carpentry. I guess I need to…

The artist, careening towards her own camera after getting in a hanging chair.

God do I love it though. Learning to set up off-camera flash and use softboxes. Learning how to install ceiling hooks into the beams. Learning about tethered shooting. Learning from people I care about who want to share their help with decor, or moving, or make-up, or hair.

The artist, enjoying a freshly made bed.

No woman is an island. I can’t do everything by myself. But I’m small, scrappy, and able to get enough done to meet more people who can teach me and give me feedback. I’m really happy to have those people in my life, and I’m so excited to meet more of them. So excited to maybe hire them one day, see them use their skills before a shoot.

The artist, looking with longing.

There’s always more to learn. Always more to do. But as long as it keeps being this fun, I’ll keep learning and I’ll keep doing.
